Hard water is water that contains a high concentration of dissolved minerals, primarily calcium and magnesium ions. These minerals are typically present in the form of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) and magnesium carbonate (MgCO3), but other compounds like sulfates and bicarbonates may also contribute to hardness. The hardness of water is usually measured in terms of calcium carbonate equivalents (ppm CaCO3 or grains per gallon). Water is categorized as follows based on its hardness:

  1. Soft water: 0-60 ppm CaCO3

  2. Moderately hard water: 61-120 ppm CaCO3

  3. Hard water: 121-180 ppm CaCO3

  4. Very hard water: More than 180 ppm CaCO3

Hard water can have several effects, including the formation of scale deposits in pipes and appliances, reduced lathering of soap and detergents, and potential interference with the performance of certain water-dependent equipment. Water softeners are commonly used to reduce hardness by replacing calcium and magnesium ions with sodium ions through a process called ion exchange
